Garden Visit: Stonecrop Gardens (Spring)

Stonecrop Gardens begins it’s season with Spring Open House Week, and I finally made it over there to check it out. It was a wonderful spring to visit because of the unusually warm weather we’ve had – so much was in bloom, bud and leafing out.

Upon check-in at the Potting Shed we were given a copy of the plant list. Over 600 plants listed, it’s the who’s who of the Conservatory, Pit House, Alpine House and End House. Like a scavenger hunt for plant geeks – so much fun!

It took us a while to figure out what this was blooming on the shore - Petasites japonicus var. giganteus (Giant Butterbur).

In the Alpine House

Tulipa humilis ‘Persian Pearl’

The Pit House is kept cool (mid 40s).

Lathyrus vernus (Spring vetchling or Perennial Pea)

Forsythia viridissima ‘Bronxensis’

Stonecrop Gardens is open to the public April 1 – October 31, Monday – Saturday, as well as a few select Sundays, from 10am-5pm ($5 entry fee). Stonecrop has a full calendar of events including seasonal, guided garden tours offered at least once a month on Wednesday evenings and the Alpine Plant Sale on 4/27. Visit their website for more details and calendar.
